My previous review gave STDU Viewer a high rating, but unfortunately after discovering a lot of instability and PDF rendering flaws I've had to change my mind. If you want the app for PDFs, there are much better options out there that are faster and less bloated than Adobe's reader, as well as smaller in size and free.
By instability I'm referring to frequent crashes on my Windows 7 system, not only in the browser feature and the loading of some PDF documents, but also when trying to open the Paragraphs and Fonts section of the options dialog for text documents.

As for STDU Viewer's PDF rendering, I've seen much better quality in Sumatra PDF. In particular, I find STDU's display of music scores inaccurate and slow by comparison.

If you want just a small application to read ebooks or pdfs in addition to viewing some popular image files then this is the app for you. STDU Viewer is good for people who are not into organizing their files and just want to view them. It can view tiff, pdf, fb2, fb2.zip, pcz, dcz, djvu, cbr, cbz, test, wwf, azw, xps, jbig2, jb2, tcr, pdb and epub.

I would not take points away from it just because it can't read MS word docs or any other word processing file because it's not that type of viewer. Why would anyone expect it to read doc-type files is beyond me. It can just be used as a quick viewer and is comfortable enough to be used as a main viewer. Very light program and available as a portable version, too. Not very feature rich, but sometimes simplicity is best.

I needed a program to open an XPS file. This did the trick. I'm glad to have it. Easy to use.

At first I thought, ok, what will I do with a document viewer such as this? I'm wasting my time. Boy was I wrong...

First of all, this isn't the fanciest interface or even feature rich application. What it did for me however, was save me time by allowing me to open different documents right from it's window instead of opening different types in numerous different apps.

I had a .pdf and .txt file, opened both right there, no browsing around and opening all sorts of applications.

What this needs however, is more document types support. I feel it's very limited in this area. Maybe some .doc, html, etc... As much as I like this, I can't give it that high a rating due to it's shortcomings but will keep an eye on this one, if it improves, I will be extremely happy.

Been using it for over a year now (2 years?) and it just keeps getting better. Light on resources - works equally well on my XP netbook and desktop. Tabbed interface for multiple documents - page rotation, display area and size and navigation are all easily adjusted - and STDU Viewer remembers display preferences and where you left off reading for each document. If this had 2-page reading layout with text reflow, it would be perfect - but then I don't know of any free reader that has that :). Very stable, FAST opening and scrolling of images and text, seems compatible with all DJVU and PDF versions. Adobe is compatible w/all PDF, but is a resource pig and slow - rest I tried had compatibility issues, struggled w/images, poor interface, resource hogs and/or slow (Foxit, PDF Xchange, Sumatra, Cute PDF, Cool PDF, Nitro PDF, Windjvu, several more obscure ones). I used to dread reading documents in pdf, but with STDU viewer it's a pleasure. Recommended.
